Ochsner Lafayette General is committed to keeping our patients informed and safe when it comes to COVID-19 and influenza.
COVID-19 Community Testing
COVID-19 tests are available at no cost through the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, which ensures that COVID-19 testing is free to anyone in the U.S., including the uninsured.
For confirmed infections, reported illnesses have ranged from infected people with little to no symptoms (similar to the common cold) to people being severely ill and dying. Symptoms can include:
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
Or at least two of these symptoms:
- Repeated shaking with chills
- Muscle pain
- Sore throat
- New loss of taste or smell
It is believed at this time that symptoms of COVID-19 may appear in as few as two days or as long as 14 after exposure.
If you are experiencing symptoms: testing is available at all of our Urgent Care locations, hospitals and at our community testing sites.
If you are not experiencing symptoms: you can still receive a COVID-19 test at one of our community test sites.
Community Flu Vaccinations
Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a potentially serious disease that may lead to hospitalization and sometimes even death. An annual flu vaccine is the best way to protect yourself against flu. Though the vaccine may not completely prevent you from contracting the virus, there are still many benefits from receiving it, namely the reduction of:
- Risk and severity of illness;
- Risk of hospitalization; and
- Flu-related death in children.
The vaccine is an important preventative tool for people with chronic conditions and helps protect women during pregnancy. Getting vaccinated also helps protect others around you.
Today, we don't know how influenza and COVID-19 affect one another, but the threat of a "dual pandemic" this flu season is a strong possibility not only for our area, but for the nation.
And now, more than ever, it's important we do all we can to remain healthy and protected both from the flu and from COVID-19. If you've never received a flu vaccine before, the process is a simple one that has vastly improved over the years -- and serves as our best defense for protecting ourselves, our families and our community.
