Breast Care at Ochsner Lafayette General

One in eight women in the U.S. will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. This month, we ask that you advocate for breast health and wellness and say #yesmamm to your annual mammogram. Regular screening tests are the most reliable way to find breast cancer early and treat it successfully.

Our breast care program provides women with comprehensive options across Acadiana. From mammography and imaging services to cancer treatment and surgical breast reconstruction, our expert team delivers personalized care for each patient.

Annual Mammograms

Mammograms are electronic pictures used to detect early signs of breast cancer. Starting at age 40, women with a moderate risk should begin screening with a mammogram each year. Those considered high-risk – either from genetic testing, radiation therapy at an early age or based on family history – should schedule a breast MRI and mammogram every year starting at age 30.

Helpful tips for a successful scan include

  • Avoid wearing perfume, fragrant powder or deodorant as these can show up on a mammogram as white spots.
  • Wear separates. You will need to undress from the waist up for the screening.
  • If this is your first mammogram at Ochsner Lafayette General, bring a list of all prior mammograms, biopsies or breast imaging.
  • Consider your cycle: Avoid scheduling your mammogram the week before or during your period. Sensitivity during this time might make the experience more uncomfortable.
